Bill and Melody saw no parked cars that night when they parked on Lovers' Lane. They supposed this was due to concern about the rapist — "The Full Moon Maniac," the Armitage Advertiser called him, although only one of his attacks had occurred exactly on a night of a full moon. He preyed on couples in lovers' lanes, locking the man in the trunk of a car while he forced the woman to commit what the Advertiser called "unnatural acts."
"Don't stop," Melody said. Then she opened her eyes and screamed. Bill's skinny, naked body merged into a black shadow beneath the moon, a gun jammed in his ear.
"Don't scream again, or I'll kill him," the maniac said.
